Connecting Karen HeartsThe Lost Book of the Karen People
A Story of Faith and HopeIn the 1980s, I came across a fascinating article about the Karen tribe in Myanmar. It told an ancient story that gripped my heart. According to their tradition, God the Creator gave a book to each of His children, and the Karen were the eldest.
But in a tragic twist, the eldest son lost his precious book. The prophecy foretold that one day, the younger white brother would cross the seas to return it. When Adoniram Judson, an American missionary, arrived in the late 1700s, many Karen believed he was the fulfillment of this prophecy, bringing back their lost book – the Bible. And they were right.
Through Judson, the Karen were introduced to the Word of God, and an extraordinary transformation took place. Over 30% of the Karen people in Myanmar embraced Jesus Christ as their Savior. Their story of faith, resilience, and the restoration of the Gospel has echoed throughout generations.I had the honor of meeting Lawrence Po, the grandson of the founder of the Karen nation.
His passion for his people left a lasting impression on me, deepening my admiration for the Karen and their remarkable history.A Legacy of Faith in ActionToday, my wife Sriphai and I, missionaries with the Avoda Foundation, continue that legacy. We serve the Karen people – both those living in Thailand and the refugees fleeing the violence in Myanmar. Our work includes operating a Christian learning center for Burmese refugee children in Maesot, where we cater to over 200 students, many of whom come from Karen families.
The civil war in Myanmar has displaced tens of thousands of Karen people, who now find themselves in dire need of food and shelter in Thailand. These refugees, often having fled with nothing, are struggling to survive. As we provide them with nutritious food, we also have the privilege of sharing the Gospel, helping them find spiritual nourishment in Christ.A Vision for the Future: Connecting Karen HeartsWe have a dream – a vision born out of love and a deep calling.
We want to connect the suffering Karen refugees in Thailand with the Karen people living abroad, particularly in the USA. We know that there are thousands of Karen brothers and sisters who have built new lives in the West, yet they remain connected to their heritage and their people’s struggles. Here’s where you can help.
Our goal is to recruit 2,000 Karen members who will commit to supporting our Food-Aid program. For just USD 10 a month, you can provide life-saving food for your fellow Karen who are facing unimaginable hardships.

But it’s more than just food. With every meal, we are sharing the love of Christ and proclaiming the Gospel.
