Chaiyah: A Green Hope for Refugees

Chaiyah spinach or Mexican Spinach is not only delicious and versatile in many dishes but also packed with numerous nutritional benefits.

What is Chaiyah spinach?

Chaiyah spinach is a plant native to Mexico with large leaves resembling papaya leaves and a taste similar to spinach but more intense. It is rich in essential nutrients like vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, and protein.


Benefits of Chaiyah spinach :

  • Boosts Immunity: Chaiyah spinach is rich in vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system and helps prevent infections.

  • Bone Health: Calcium in Chaiyah spinach helps strengthen bones and teeth, reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

  • Blood Health: The iron in Chaiyah spinach aids in red blood cell production, helping prevent anemia.

  • Aids Digestion: The fiber in Chaiyah spinach supports healthy digestion and regular bowel movements.

  • Reduces Chronic Disease Risk: Antioxidants in Chaiyah spinach help lower the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.



Chaiyah spinach in Food for Refugees

Currently, chaiyah is increasingly used as an ingredient in food for refugees, especially in the Avoda Food Aid project aimed at supporting Burmese refugees. The food distributed to refugees includes chaiyah in recipes such as:


  • Pre-cooked Rice Soup with Taurine : This easy-to-digest dish is enhanced with Chaiyah spinach to increase its nutritional value, adding protein, vitamins, and essential minerals.

  • Energy Bars : These bars are high in energy and nutrition, combining rice bran, a source of fiber, Chaiyah spinach rich in vitamins and minerals, dried bananas for potassium, and peanuts for protein.

Incorporating Chaiyah spinach into refugee meals makes excellent use of a highly beneficial plant, ensuring refugees receive essential nutrients for better health.



So, donating food to refugees not only provides sustenance but also promotes their health and well-being.
